More Sunday Morning Waffles

When I was a mere lass of 15, I decided I could not be a member of the Catholic Church. I refused to be confirmed because I disagreed with the subservient role of women in the Church.

John Forbes Kerry refuses to make that decision today. He's had 60 years to learn that he can't have things both ways. Yet, the lesson hasn't taken. He wants to attend a Catholic Church and receive communion. But, he also wants to directly oppose the Church's position on abortion & homosexuality.

Whether you agree or disagree with the policies of the Catholic Church isn't the issue. In any case, the Church isn't a democracy. The real point is what this says about Kerry. It demonstrates his desire to be on both sides of an issue. He's a religious man, but he doesn't believe in the teachings of his Church. He's a traditional religous man, but he supports abortion rights and the right of gays to adopt. He thinks we should have gone to war in Iraq (he voted for it), but he would have gone about it "differently".

What would happen if Kerry actually had to make real decisions with real consequences? What if, instead of being one of a hundred nuanced Senators, he was Commander in Chief? What would he do? What would he base these decisions on? Deeply held beliefs? Ideology? Pros & cons of each side? Polls? Astrology? I have no idea. What I do believe, however, is that whatever decision Kerry made, he'd change his mind and try to cover both sides.
